Many students become overwhelmed by the process of college admissions, but it doesn’t have to be that way. With the help of our counselors and fellow students, we have gained insight into the looming topic of college applications. Students have mixed opinions on when they believe you should begin looking for colleges. Some say as soon as your sophomore year, and others say at the beginning of your senior year. When applying to colleges, it is recommended to start as soon as possible; the soonest you can apply is typically in October. Georgiafutures.com is a website that allows you to select your preferred college and complete application forms. However, applications do cost money. The cost will differ between colleges, and some even have certain days where applying has no fee. Ryan Cantrell, a senior at LHS, believes students planning to attend college should have a goal school in mind to motivate themselves into doing the best for their education. One of our counselors, Matthew Gilbert, shared with us his insight into our college admission process. Mr. Gilbert believes the application process is the hardest part of the task. He states, ”I believe that when a student starts looking at the application, they get overwhelmed, and they think it’s an unbelievable amount of work, and they don’t know how they’re going to do it.” He suggests students begin with an easier application to prepare themselves for the difficult ones. Students at Loganville High School believe it is important to attend college. Isabelle Hurd, a junior, stated, ”It is important to go to school [college] because it helps you grow and expand your knowledge beyond who you already are, and it opens up many doors in the future.” Ryan Cantrell agreed with this, noting, “Going to college will better your future, and make you a more appealing candidate when looking for a job. Having a college education could also improve your salary positively.” Another student, Dominique Torres, an upcoming senior, believes students should go straight to college out of high school. She explains that many students take a break for work or personal reasons and by the time the break is finished, the people have extended their “break” time. The college admissions scandal has been a big news topic circulating recently. Students have mixed feelings about the situation. Dominique Torres says, “Personally, this upset me. I see students from all over the nation accomplish so much in order to make it into these “top colleges,” that are rejected. Meanwhile, there are these mediocre students who are accepted into “top colleges” because their parents paid for their admission. It betrays many moral standards I hold dear to me. Looking at the students that got into the colleges because of their rich parents should have their degrees revoked. They did not fairly earn it. And many people think that their admission and the actual degree are two different things, but they did not rightfully earn it.” Ryan Cantrell declares, ”Honestly, I think it's funny, that people are that desperate that they go as far as lying about themselves and would create a misconception of who they are to the world.”
